Before and after graduation she worked as a long-distance operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone. It was during this time that she was introduced by her little brother, Jerry, to the handsome gas station attendant down the street.
Dale Casteel and Dorothy were united in marriage on September 3, 1946. They were best of friends until Dale's unfortunate passing in June of 1998. During these 52 years they both touched the lives of countless people, Dorothy as the school secretary at Central Elementary before moving to the newly built Heller Elementary in Neodesha and Dale as the instrumental music instructor at Neodesha High School and Independence Community College. Dorothy often referred to all of the wonderful students she called her "second family."
Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church. She belonged to the Neodesha Chapter of BPW of which she was named Woman of the Year in 1993, was a member of the Sugar and Spice Bridge Club, the Birthday Club, and the Glitzy Dozen Red Hat Ladies.
