Dick W Hurst, 78, went to the Lord with family by his side in the comforts of his own home on December 25, 2019. He was born to the late Warren and Viola (Clubine) Hurst of Independence, KS on June 18, 1941.
Dick is a graduate of Independence High School. While working at Whistlers Building Supply as a glazer, he answered the call from his country while being drafted into the US Marine Corps where he honorably served for a little over two years to include a deployment to Vietnam.
Upon being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, he came home to continue to be a glazer for Harlin Glass and work for Cobalt Boats until retirement. On July 25, 1976, Dick married the love of this life Michelle “Miki” DuBois in rural Cherryvale. They had one son, Richard “Rick” which Dick was extremely proud of and loved to talk about with a beam in his eyes.
During the summer you would find Dick in his garden where everyone could count on receiving plenty of fresh vegetables from his prize garden. Later in life, he loved gardening with his “little helpers” aka his grandkids.
Dick is survived by his wife Miki of the home, his son Rick and wife Natasha, grandkids Sean, Preston, Krystina of Iola, and brother George Hurst of Fredonia. He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Beverly (PD) Inman, Caroline (Cliff) Leitzel, and Peggy (Jerry) Harlin.
Friends and family will have an opportunity to pay respect for Dick at a gathering with the date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, in remembrance of the last trip where he finally received the welcome home he should have received returning from Vietnam, a trip that he and his son had the chance to take together as, not only as father and son, but as fellow Marines, please send memorial contributions to The Southern Coffey County High School Honor Flight at 1010 N Main Street Leroy, KS 66857.
