Cecil "Bud" Wm. Shoop

June 28, 1932 — March 11, 2025

Cecil "Bud" Wm. Shoop was born on June 28, 1932, to Walter "Wayne" Shoop and Ruth May Larcom in Neodesha, Kansas.

Bud attended schools in Neodesha, graduating in 1950. His was the first class to graduate from the "new gym". During high school he helped build "The Dinner" at 2nd and Main that later became the "Dairy Queen".

Bud started working on the farm for Melvin Small in 1950. He was a "jack of all trades"! From delivering calves, to taking them to market. He planted straight rows without GPS guidance! He helped build a workshop and a hay barn, and repaired tractors and equipment.

He would stay at a job until it was finished. He once cut his wrist opening a bag of seed corn and finished planting before coming home and asked, "Do you think I need stitches?"

Bud enjoyed hunting and fishing. He built a black powder gun from a kit and got his first deer.

In the 1970's, Bud got interested in short wave radios and was a member of the BDX Radio Club. The family traveled to several states for Club Conventions. The Kansas group hosted the club and Roy Failor helped Bud roast a whole hog.

He retired from farming June of 1994 and spent hours watching the construction of 400 Highway. He liked to watch any building project in the area.

In 2005, Bud helped Kenny Richards and others build the Girl Scout House. That same year he added a porch and 10 feet to our home with help from friends.

He bought old tractors and overhauled them. He also built a horseless carriage that grandson Nathian Krege drove to take his date to prom.

Bud was roofing the garage and fell off breaking his left wrist. Once that healed the next project was building another garage to store tractors, then added a car port for more tractors. He'd buy lawn mowers at auctions and rebuild them to sell.

Bud's next hobby was wood working. First it was bird houses, lawn chairs, storage benches, stools, and plant stands. Even after cutting off part of the fingers on his left hand, twice, he made trinket boxes for all the family. Left over tiles went into trivets and coasters.

Bud saw the tounge on the old cannon at Norman #1 and used a fallen oak tree to make a new one. He also repaired the stained-glass window in the chapel with Ray Failors help.

June 5, 1955, Bud married Barbara Jean Beaty at the Altoona, KS Christian Church. Rev. Travis Severs, who had married Barbara's parents in May 1936, preformed the ceremony. From this union came Linda Kay, Lisa Marie, Deborah Rena, and Bud Eugene.

Bud is survived by his wife of 69 years, children Linda King, Lisa Ashworth, and Bud Shoop, sister Ester Martin, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Deborah, brothers Marin, Orvale, Walter, and sister Ruth McWhirt.

Memorials may be given to the W.A. Rankin Memorial Library. There will be a small private family service at a later date.
