Betty Louise Smith, 80, of Neodesha, died Tuesday, July 21 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. Mrs. Smith had been a resident of the F. W. Huston Senior Living Center in Winchester, Kansas for the past 15 months. Funeral services will be at the Loran Fawcett Chapel in Neodesha at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 24. Internment will follow at the Thayer City Cemetery in Thayer, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 23 at the Loran Fawcett Chapel. Betty was born on August 22, 1934, at Thayer, Kansas, to Dorothy A. (Kirk) Smedley and Albert Homer Smedley. She attended Thayer schools. She married LaVerne E. Smith on September 22, 1951, at Erie, Kansas. The couple lived at Parsons, Kansas and Bartlesville, Oklahoma and then moved to Neodesha in October of 1964. Mrs. Smith was a production worker and a cook. She completed a dietary manager certificate at the Southeast Kansas Vocational Technical School in 1984. Betty was known for her love of cooking and her pie baking. She won Four category awards in The Good News cooking contest. She was a member of the Neodesha United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, LaVerne of the home and two children: a daughter, Peggy Mailen and husband, Douglas of Winchester, Kansas and a son, Randall Smith of Parsons, Kansas. Additionally, she is survived by two loved grandchildren: a grandson, Kent Mailen of Casablanca, Morocco, Africa, and a granddaughter, Susan Mailen of Winchester, Kansas. Additional survivors include: a brother, James Smedley of Thayer, Kansas; a sister, Helen Fogle of Chanute, Kansas; and a brother, LaVerne Smedley of Thayer, Kansas. Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, George (Sonny) Smedley of Thayer, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association and may be left at the funeral home.
