Barbara Smith

Barbara J. Smith, age 86, of Independence, Kansas died Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Neodesha City Cemetery with Pastor Dave Cheshier of the Christ Church officiating under the direction of the Loran Fawcett Chapel.

The family has suggested memorials to the Independence Library and contributions may be left at the Loran Fawcett Chapel.

Barbara "Jean" Smith was born October 11, 1928 in Coffeyville, Kansas the daughter of Charles and Hazel (Hyde) Bartlett. She grew up in Coffeyville, Kansas and graduated from the Coffeyville High School. Barbara also attended Pittsburg State College and Independence Community College.

On September 4, 1948 Barbara married Joe Smith in Neodesha, Kansas. Joe preceded her in death on January 9, 2001. Barbara worked at the Independence Library for several years.

Survivors include two sons David Bartlett Smith and Jay Michael Smith both of Independence, Kansas; three daughters Barbara Lindquist of Lindsborg, Kansas, Rebecca Passauer and Elizabeth Reynolds both of Independence, Kansas; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
