He attended schools in New York, New Jersey and Nebraska, graduating from high school in Battle Creek, Nebraska in 1943. He spent his summers there working for farmers in the area until he was drafted in Dec. 1944. After basic training in Camp Roberts and Ft. Ord, in California he was on his way to the Pacific theater, serving as a medic for over two years, after becoming ill he received a medical discharge in May 1946, with the rank of Staff Sgt. He returned home to Valley Center, farmed his fathers acreage and rented some additional land he also stitched brooms for his father. Having been raised in town, his lifelong dream was to farm and he had plenty of time while in the hospitals to study books on farming.

Allen met the love of his life, Cecille Petersen they were wed on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948 in Wichita, Kansas. While in the Valley Center area Allen and Cecille had three children Michael Kent on January 18, 1950, Alana Ruth on October 24, 1951 and Christy Ann on July 20, 1953 all born in Wichita. After moving to Altoona a son, Kurtis Allen, was born on July 5, 1956. Allens lifelong prayer of owning a farm was answered and he was able to purchase his first farm east of Altoona also raising his family there. In addition to farming Allen worked as the Artificial Inseminator thru KS State College for 5 years, then working for the next 5 years for the National Farmers Organization in the dairy department. Retiring from farming in 1974 Allen bought a drilling rig and drilled wells for him and others. Retiring once again he and Cec enjoyed camping and traveling for a short while. They soon felt the need to be doing something so they took on a new venture with their soninlaw, building large sail boats in Chanute, Kansas. Allen and Cec were more than willing to continue their love for travel by delivering the sail boats all over the country. Allen and Cec were given a gift of an English Mastiff puppy that soon created a new passion for the couple they started Prairie Pride Kennels and for the next ten years breeding and selling puppies provided great joy.
