Alex Calvert Alex Henry Van Volkingburg Calvert of Neodesha, KS, died Friday, April 18, 2008, at the Wilson Medical Center Reece Campus. He was 97. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at the Neodesha Cemetery under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Loran Fawcett Chapel. Dale Milner will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. The son of Alexander and Cordelia Graham Van Volkingburg, he was born December 22, 1910, in Fort Scott, KS. He was adopted at the age of six months by his aunt, Mary Van Volkinburg Calvert and her husband Albert. He was a lifelong Neodesha resident and attended school here. On June 30, 1932, he was united in marriage to Fern Cornelius in Neodesha, KS. She preceded him in death on August 20, 1990. Mr. Calvert worked for the Frisco Railroad for 40 years, retiring as a car inspector in 1975. Survivors include a grandson, Robert Joe Phillips; one great-granddaughter; and one nephew, Donald Rhodes of Hurricane, WV. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Phillips; one brother, Forrest Cummings; one sister, Mamie Rhodes; and one great-grandson. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association and may be left at the funeral home.
